Meet Nil

MA, LPC, LAC, ACS, NCC, DVCS

Nil Buckley is a licensed professional counselor, licensed addiction counselor, domestic violence expert witness, forensic evaluator, clinical supervisor, author, trainer, and founder of Vivus Counseling Services and The Care Method. Her work exists at the intersection of trauma, intimate partner violence, forensic evaluation, counselor education, and meaningful behavioral change.

Originally from Brazil, Nil’s story began far from the professional spaces she now occupies. She was raised in a small village where life required resilience, imagination, and faith long before opportunity was visible. As a young girl, she learned to dream beyond the circumstances around her. At age 14, she began teaching herself English through music, not knowing that language would eventually become one of the bridges to her future. By age 17, she was teaching English. At 22, she immigrated to the United States with limited resources, deep determination, and a quiet belief that her life could become something larger than survival.

That journey shaped the woman and professional she is today.

Nil’s professional identity was built through years of working with some of the most complex areas of counseling practice, including domestic violence, coercive control, trauma, addiction, court-mandated treatment, forensic evaluation, and high-conflict family systems. She has provided direct clinical services, supervised clinicians, conducted evaluations, testified as an expert witness, trained professionals, and developed structured tools to help counselors work more effectively with clients who are often misunderstood, defensive, traumatized, or court-involved.

As the author and creator of The Care Method, Nil transformed years of clinical insight, research, supervision, and forensic experience into a trauma-informed domestic violence intervention curriculum designed to promote accountability, self-reflection, and long-lasting behavioral change. The Care Method reflects Nil’s belief that effective treatment must be structured, ethical, non-shaming, and deeply rooted in the belief that people are capable of change when they are given the right tools, guidance, and accountability.

Nil is passionate about elevating the field of domestic violence intervention and forensic counseling. Her work challenges professionals to move beyond one-size-fits-all approaches and toward more thoughtful, individualized, research-informed practice. She is especially committed to preparing counselors to work competently with court-mandated clients, justice-involved populations, survivors, individuals who have caused harm, military families, and communities impacted by trauma and crisis.

At the heart of Nil’s work is a deep commitment to truth, safety, accountability, and human dignity. She believes that counseling can change lives, but only when clinicians are willing to do the deeper work of understanding people in context — their trauma, their choices, their relationships, their patterns, their culture, their pain, and their capacity for change.

Beyond her professional life, Nil is a wife, mother, writer, and woman deeply connected to her roots. She is married to a loving and supportive husband and is the proud mother of two daughters, who continue to remind her of what matters most. She finds joy in cooking homemade Brazilian food, gathering people around her table, hosting friends and family, and creating spaces where people feel welcomed and cared for. Writing has always been part of her soul. Long before she became an author in the United States, she wrote poetry, and she continues to feel most inspired near the beach, where reflection, creativity, and memory often meet.

Nil’s life and work are guided by a simple but powerful desire: to take everything she has lived, learned, endured, studied, and built — and use it to create something meaningful for others. She continues to walk toward greater impact, deeper scholarship, stronger training, and a future where counselors are better prepared to serve people affected by trauma, violence, crisis, and relational harm.

Her story is one of resilience, transformation, faith, and purpose. Her work is dedicated to helping others transform as well.
